A Look At The 1940 Census
We are very fortunate to have more options for finding those elusive ancestors in the 1940 Census.
NARA will release the actual census pages to the general population on a non-fee basis. Hard to believe, but true.

As most of you know, until the name indexes are published, finding the correct enumeration district is essential. Steve Morse and Dr. Joel Weintraub have created the extraordinary ONE STEP web pages for finding Enumeration Districts by street names and addresses. This should be your first approach in finding the correct Enumeration District. In addition, their website hosts links to a multitude of resources for the genealogist. This site should be number one on your favorites list.
And for Cook County, A Look At Cook is presenting the Enumeration District maps for both the City of Chicago, and this time around, for the Township Enumeration Districts that fall outside the boundaries of the City of Chicago. The Enumeration District Maps are being presented in PDF format, on a trial basis. PDFs allow for adjusting the size of the maps for viewing and printing. It's a nice feature, but the file sizes are larger and take longer to download. I am assuming most of you have some sort of high speed internet connection. Your feedback is most welcome and will determine is this format should be permanent. You will need to download the Adobe Reader program to view the links. This program is free.
There are a few things you should know about the 1940 Enumeration District maps and Descriptions on these pages.
The directional coordinates are estimates. Depending on the location of the street, the directional coordinates may vary somewhat. They are provided as a helpful tool as to the general vicinity of a street in the City of Chicago. Do not take them as definitive.
The links for the Enumeration District Descriptions will be activated shortly. A few of the Township maps remain to be completed. Additional data will be added in the future, as it becomes available.
